Riyadh Airport Attack Forces Flight Cancellations and Diversions

A Riyadh airport attack on Saturday forced the suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport, sending inbound flights to alternate destinations and leaving thousands of travelers facing cancellations. Saudi aviation authorities confirmed the shutdown following reports of a missile striking part of the airport’s domestic terminal complex. The incident is the latest in a series of attacks that have severely disrupted commercial aviation in Saudi Arabia.

Missile Strike Reported at King Khalid International Airport

According to the Associated Press, a regional official said a missile struck the complex housing terminals 3 and 4, which serve domestic flights. Witnesses described a powerful explosion, injured people inside the airport and emergency vehicles rushing to the scene. Passengers were evacuated from portions of the facility as authorities assessed the damage.

Reuters reported that more than a dozen ambulances responded to the airport following the explosion. The full number of casualties from Saturday’s incident had not been confirmed, and Saudi authorities were still evaluating the extent of the damage.

The attack follows several strikes earlier in the week that killed four people and damaged a Saudia aircraft on the ground. Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for previous attacks on the airport, although responsibility for Saturday’s strike had not been established at the time of reporting.

Airlines Suspend Flights as Cancellations Mount

Flight operations at Riyadh deteriorated rapidly following the latest incident. Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 showed inbound aircraft being diverted or canceled, while FlightAware reported at least 225 canceled flights over a 24-hour period. Several international airlines had already suspended service because of the earlier attacks. Lufthansa Group announced that its flights to Riyadh would remain suspended through October 16, while Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air also canceled scheduled operations.

Saturday’s developments brought further cancellations from Kuwait Airways, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways. Some of those disruptions extend into Monday, leaving passengers with limited options for reaching or departing the Saudi capital. The closures also affect aircraft and crews scheduled to operate subsequent flights. Depending on how long the restrictions remain in place, airlines may need to reposition aircraft, adjust crew assignments and revise connecting itineraries.

Riyadh Airport Attack Raises Wider Airspace Safety Concerns

The disruption is no longer limited to airport operations. Repeated missile and drone attacks have increased the risks facing civilian aircraft flying into and across parts of Saudi Arabia. On October 9, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency updated its conflict-zone advisory for Saudi airspace. The revised bulletin recommends that operators avoid specified portions of the country’s airspace and exercise caution elsewhere within the Jeddah Flight Information Region.

EASA specifically identified the danger posed by missile and drone activity, falling debris and active air-defense systems. The agency also warned that military interception operations increase the possibility of civilian aircraft being misidentified. Those warnings create additional planning considerations for airlines and flight crews. Dispatchers must account for changing restrictions, alternate routes and suitable diversion airports, while operators determine whether individual flights can be conducted safely.

Travelers Urged to Avoid Airport Until Conditions Improve

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia has advised American citizens to avoid King Khalid International Airport and the surrounding area following the attacks. Travelers with existing reservations are being encouraged to check directly with their airlines before leaving for the airport. Passengers should also review their carrier’s cancellation and rebooking policies, particularly if their itinerary includes connections through Riyadh. Additional schedule changes are possible even after individual flights begin operating again.

No confirmed timetable for a full return to normal operations had been announced in the reporting available Saturday. Airlines will have to reassess both airport conditions and the surrounding airspace before restoring their regular schedules.
